Old house remodeling project.
One day I have decided, that it is time to get rid of our old
outdated wallpaper in the powder room. The room is small. The wall paper
was there when we moved into the house 15 years ago. It is dark blue
with yellow flowers. The room looks old and small. I did not really
know, if the walls were treated before wall paper was put on the wall.
So I went on the Internet to pick few tips and got started. First I
checked, if there are any loose corners, so I can start fro,.
Fortunately, I had plenty of loose corners. The wall paper consisted of
top paper layer and paper backing with adhesive. I have heard of
Steamers, that suppose to help to loosen-up the old glue and will make
wall paper removal easier. I have decided to try old fashion method. I
have learned from my neighbors: Dissolve white plain vinegar
with hot water ( 50/50 solution) and spray the wall paper. Let is stay
for some time until wall paper starts to loosen-up.
I started from the corner and slowly and carefully pulled the paper
in 15degree angle. Some wallpaper came off clean and easy, some wall
paper was separated, so the paper backing still attached to the wall. No
panic - I just spray the backing paper with vinegar/water solution and
let it soak. Than I removed it easy with plastic spatula.
The wallpaper did not came our clean in some areas. The drywall was
slightly damaged especially in the corners. I washed the old glue from
the walls and let it dry overnight. Next day I went to Home Depot to get
some tools and paste to repair the drywall and get the paint. I have
repaired the damaged drywall and let it dry overnight. Next day I
smoothed the walls with the sandpaper block, clean the mess, and painted
whole room in light olive green. This is the easiest and most rewarding
project I have ever done in the house. If I can do it - everyone can.
The project took two days to complete and cost me $50 in tools and
supply.
